Avoiding COVID-19 Scams

COVID-19 scams part 2

As the scams evolve, we’re here to help you stay informed!

Because scams are constantly evolving, it’s important to
always be on alert. Scammers are always looking for new ways to prey on anyone
who lets their guard down.

Here are a few new tips to help protect you from being
scammed:

  • With all of the new “contact tracers” out there now, it’s important to remember that legitimate tracers need health information. If they are asking for anything personal or financial, they are not real contact tracers.
  • Do not respond to texts, emails or calls from unknown numbers. Some of the texts and emails you receive may have links to click on. Never click on a link unless you are expecting it. A lot of times texts and emails tend to have grammatical errors. That should raise an immediate red flag.
  • Never share personal or financial information via email or text.
  • Be on the lookout for spoofed phone numbers. Scammers will try to trick you into answering or responding by making it look like it’s a local phone call.
  • Ignore any offers for test kits or vaccinations. Scammers are attempting to sell products to treat or prevent COVID without any proof that they work.
  • Scammers tend to prey on older Americans’ concerns about health and finances.
  • Always do your homework before making a donation. Visit https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/features/how-donate-wisely-and-avoid-charity-scams

It is important to remember that government agencies or
financial institutions will never call to ask you for personal or financial
information. Never give out your social security number, username/passwords,
account information, credit/debit card numbers, PINS, etc. You can NEVER be too
suspicious. The more informed you are, the better. If something seems too good
to be true, it probably is!
