Don’t Talk to Strangers

The “Wrong Number” Text Scam Explained

It may seem harmless at first. You get a text from an unfamiliar number saying something casual and friendly, like “Are we still on for dinner?” Your instinct might be to reply and politely let them know they’ve reached the wrong person.

That’s exactly what scammers are counting on.

This so-called “wrong number” text is a common scam designed to start a conversation. The message isn’t a mistake at all. It’s the opening move from a cybercriminal trying to gain your trust. Once you respond, they’ll keep chatting, often acting friendly or interested in getting to know you. Over time, the conversation shifts toward money.

The scammer may claim they’re in trouble and need help, ask you to send gift cards, or introduce an “investment opportunity,” often involving cryptocurrency. The details vary, but the end goal is always the same: to trick you into handing over your money or personal information.

How to Protect Yourself

You can avoid falling victim to this scam by following a few simple precautions:

  • Never share personal or financial information with someone you’ve only interacted with through text messages. Even if they seem trustworthy, urgent, or offer an exciting opportunity, scammers commonly use these tactics to pressure victims into making quick decisions.
  • Don’t reply to suspicious texts from unknown numbers. Responding lets cybercriminals know your number is active, which can lead to more scam attempts in the future.
  • Mark suspicious messages as spam or junk using your phone’s settings. This helps your phone carrier identify and block scam messages, protecting both you and others.

When it comes to unexpected messages from strangers, it’s always safest to ignore, block, and report. That one reply you think is being polite could open the door to a costly scam. Stay alert and keep your information, and your money, safe.
